Key facts
This Holden Torana SLR 5000 A9X is a collector-quality example of the legendary and extremely rare Australian homologation special sedan, which was built for the Group C Touring Car series.
Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre 'L31' V8, producing around 176kW and driving the rear wheels via a four-speed 'M21' manual transmission with a heavy-duty Salisbury differential.
The odometer shows 196,581 kilometers from new.
This Torana SLR 5000 A9X was originally manufactured in Dandenong, Melbourne.
This example is understood to be number 218 of just 405 Torana A9X models produced, and one of only 305 four-door sedans.
Equipment and features
The A9X Torana was originally produced as a 'Performance Equipment Package' to homologate the model for use in the Group C Touring Car series, where it achieved impressive results, winning the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1978 and 1979, the Sandown 500 in 1977, 1978 and 1979, and most famously a crushing six-lap victory in 1979 at Mount Panorama driven by Peter Brock and Jim Richards.
Modifications over the standard model included Radial Tuned Suspension geometry, a heavy-duty Salisbury rear axle and differential, rear disc brakes, alloy front callipers, revised front suspension, a front spoiler with cooling ducts, a thermostatic electric fan, a coolant recovery system, a heavy-duty radiator, and a distinctive rear-facing bonnet induction scoop.
This example is finished in the bold hue of Flamenco Red with a matte black bonnet and window trim, and a silver rear spoiler section with cut-out 'SLR 5000' lettering.
Inside, the cabin features Slate Black and gray vinyl upholstery, including perforated inserts on the seats and door cards, with silver trim inlays on the dashboard.
It rides on a set of Bathurst specification 15-inch six-spoke split-rim alloy wheels finished in gloss black with polished lips, shod with Falken Ziex ZE912 tires on the front, and Yokohama Radial 352s on the rear.
The factory specification includes a three-spoke steering wheel, manually operated windows, heater and ventilation controls, and a top-tinted front windscreen.
The car will be accompanied by its Vehicle Production Report, a genuine spare wheel, the original South Australian number plate, two sets of keys, the owner's manual and guide, a spare gear knob, and a print-out of original production option charts and the full A9X production run-down.
Condition
The previously resprayed Flamenco Red paintwork is reported to be in excellent condition.
Moving inside, the cabin is in great shape given the car's age, no mechanical or electrical faults.
This Holden Torana SLR 5000 A9X is a 'timewarp' example of the legendary and highly sought-after homologation special sedan, offered in impressive, entirely original condition. One of only 305 four-door examples produced, boasting a number of highly desirable factory performance and cosmetic upgrades, and representing a significant piece of Australian motorsport history, this stunning example would make a discerning addition to any collection, and an exciting companion for spirited weekend drives, and car show visits alike.
